Q: How many students will be accepted?

We will accept a maximum of twenty students from UNC and other campuses.

Q: Can I earn academic credit?

Yes, you can earn a total of 6 hours of credit for SPAN 101 (3) and 102 (3). Please note: if Spanish was your high school language, the three credit hours for SPAN 101 will not count toward the 120 hours needed for graduation from UNC-CH. After completion of the Spanish Summer Immersion Program, you could then take Spanish 203 in the second summer session and satisfy your language requirement in one summer.

Q: When is the program?

The program runs during Summer Session I, from May 15 (Orientation) to June 21 (final exam and celebratory lunch), 2018.

Q: What is the cost of the program

Tuition for 2018 has not been approved but will be close to the rates of $240 per credit hour for undergraduate residents of NC and $635 for undergraduate nonresidents. For Spanish immersion, which would earn 6 credit hours, resident students would pay about $1,440 and nonresident students about $3,810 in tuition.

Q: How do I apply?

  • Click here to download the application.

Q: When will I know if I have been accepted?

You will be notified via email within five business days, once your application has been received.

Q: If I am accepted, what must I do next?

Once accepted, you must pay a $250 program fee with a check or money order (no credit cards) to Mr. Logan Bracket in the Department of Romance Studies within 10 days of notification of acceptance to hold your place in the program. You will be enrolled in SPAN 101/102 once you have been accepted and have paid the program fee, provided you are eligible for registration for SSI (check Connect Carolina) and the SSI registration period has begun. You must pay your Summer School tuition as billed by the Cashier’s Office prior to the start of class.

Q: How do I pay tuition?

Students will be billed for tuition if they are accepted into the program prior to the deadline for the Cashier’s Office to post a bill. Students accepted after that date must prepay tuition through the Cashier’s office after being accepted into the program and before being officially enrolled.

Q: What is the itinerary for a typical day?

  • Two hours of classroom instruction each morning, divided between two instructors
  • One hour of conversation, led by graduate students in Spanish (conversation leaders), in groups of four to five students each afternoon
  • One and a half hours of early evening activities lead by an advanced graduate student.
  • Preparation for class and the conversation sessions will primarily take place in a rich, online learning environment consisting of grammar and vocabulary tutorials, pronunciation practice, exercises to practice vocabulary and grammar, videos and readings.
  • Multiple office hours throughout the day provide additional support.

Q: Who will be the instructors?

  • The director of the program is Dr. Glynis Cowell, Director of Undergraduate Studies and Spanish Language Instruction in the Department of Romance Studies. Dr. Josefa Lindquist, a faculty course coordinator in the Spanish Language Program and a native of northern Spain, is the assistant director. Drs. Cowell and Lindquist will also be the instructors.
  • Spanish graduate teaching fellows fluent in Spanish will lead daily conversation sessions.
  • A graduate teaching fellow from Romance Studies will supervise evening cultural activities and provide tutoring as needed.

Q: Where will I be living?

Students have the option to live in a North Campus residence hall on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus during the immersion program. Students currently living in campus residence halls can apply to Housing for an extension so they can remain in place until the summer residence halls open. Students can also live off-campus but are required to attend all immersion activities.
